By Andrew McIrvine, IMA Secretary General
The last couple of years have seen very remarkable developments in our Association. Where previously our main purpose was to co-host our flagship event, the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, and influence any changes affecting maxis within ISAF/World Sailing or the rating offices, we have now extended our reach and are representing the interests of maxi owners with the majority of organisers of regattas in which maxi yachts compete.
The enthusiasm and encouragement of our Board of Officers, especially our new President, has allowed us to extend our sphere of influence successfully. As ever, we rely on the very generous help we receive from Rolex and the support we get from our members.
Rolex Giraglia 2020 is part of both the IMA Mediterranean Maxi Offshore and Inshore Challenges
In line with the IMA’s principle mission –to encourage and support all forms of maxi racing internationally –4 years ago the Association created the “IMA Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge”. At the time, the growing trend among the maxis was shifting towards day racing and away from offshore events. At investigation of IMA Secretary General Andrew McIrvine, the IMA Med Offshore Challenge was started specifically to address this: to entice more maxis to race offshore again. The drive appears to be succeeding as there has been a significant increase in maxis entering the events the IMA has included in this series.
Rolex Giraglia inshores races in Saint-Tropez are again included in the 2020 “IMA Mediterranean Maxi Inshore Challenge
Following the Mediterranean Maxi Offshore Challenge created some 4 ago, it was inevitable the IMA should introduce an equivalent annual inshore series. In 2019 the “IMA Mediterranean Maxi Inshore Challenge” was born.
Encompassing the Mediterranean’s 6 major maxi events in the Med (Sail Racing PalmaVela, Rolex Capri Sailing Week, Rolex Giraglia inshores, Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez) the inaugural series was hotly contested, the winner only decided in the last race of the last event.
The inshores races of Rolex Giraglia 2020 are event III of the Mediterranean Maxi Inshore Challenge.
